Sushi is a Japanese dish made with vinegar rice and other ingredients, usually seafood. The traditional maki-zushi roll contains an outer layer of pickled radish, an inner layer of rice and a filling such as fish or meat. It's one of the most popular dishes in Japan and has become very popular outside Japan as well.

If you are lucky enough to be in Japan on market day (usually Sunday), visit the local fish market and watch your fillet of choice being expertly sliced into perfectly-sized portions by one of the many skilled masters of their craft. You'll get a much better deal than you would from any restaurant or supermarket – plus you'll avoid paying for all those other ingredients that go into making sushi (rice included).

For those who haven't been to Japan, eating sushi is a unique experience. The first question you might ask yourself is, "What kind of food is this?" It's actually a type of finger food that originated in Southeast Asia and has since spread throughout the world. It's popular in many countries, but each country has its own traditions when it comes to how they prepare it and what types of fish they use. If you want to eat sushi while on vacation in Japan but are unsure how the process works, read on for tips about how to order at restaurants or make your own!

Maki and sashimi are two types of Japanese dishes that are quite different, despite their similar names. While both consist of raw fish, maki is made with rice while sashimi is not.

Maki usually comes in the form of blocks or rolls; these can be eaten by hand or with chopsticks, and it is typically served with wasabi (a spicy root) and soy sauce as side dishes.

Sashimi, on the other hand, is always presented raw and sliced thinly so that it can be eaten without cooking it first (though some restaurants do offer cooked versions). It's often served alongside a ponzu sauce (made from citrus) or soy sauce to dip into before eating - though this varies depending on your preference! There are also many varieties of sashimi available including salmon and tuna belly slices which aren't actually considered "sashimi" because they're cooked first!

If you are ordering from a sushi restaurant, there are two ways to order your sushi: one is through the type of sushi (nigiri, maki) and the other is by eating a set of sushis. A set of sushis is usually composed of 5-7 types of sushi pieces on a plate with rice below it. This way you will get to try different types of sushis as well as enjoy their unique flavors in one sitting!
